165hz refresh rate (go into options and turn it on to see). After you enable the 165hz refresh rate, this phone comes alive in everything. I have never seen refresh rates and animation so smooth before on a phone! Even just swiping icons and web browsing becomes buttery smooth... beyond what you see on the Galaxy s22 & iphone 14 pro max. Even subtle animations become a joy to view. In apps, the refresh rate is set to whatever you have set in the phone options. But in some games, you need to go into the settings to unlock faster refresh rates and frame rates. For instance, in Clash of Clans, the game will lock you into 60FPS unless you go into the options and select "Higher Frame Rate". Then you get the insanely smooth 165 FPS mode! Some games like COD are locked at 30FPS for menu screens and then switch up to 90FPS during the game. This is a software lock at 90FPS for COD since this phone can handle much higher framerates.
Two USB charging ports! Full charge in 40 mins!
Super fast CPU & GPU. Super fast hard drive speeds for installing. Super fast animations and frame rates. Incredible stereo speakers! Selfie cam + sensors are tucked away up top, so there is no pill, no cutouts, no notch, and no giant "dynamic island" covering up your screen! Just 100% screen!
AUX port for the car and for real wired headphones giving maximum sound quality. Sound on headphones is beyond anything I've heard before on any phone!
Using the AUX port instead of Bluetooth headphones means almost zero latency from on screen sound to your ears vs lots of lag & poor latency using even the best Bluetooth headphones. Wired headphones also have zero compression, so you get the absolute best sound quality vs Bluetooth's compressed and lossy audio.
The display on the ROG 6 Pro has the second highest TOUCH sampling rate of any phone ever made. The speed is 720hz! In comparison, the top of the line iphones and samsung phones have only touch sampling rates around 120hz.
TOUCH sampling rate is how fast the phone can register a touch of the screen. So if u are playing a game and u touch the screen, a slower sampling rate will mean that you will get a delayed response before the phone can register it. The lower the sampling rate, the higher the lag in response between you touching the screen and the game/app reacting. The higher the sampling rate is, the more responsive the game/app will be when you touch the screen.
The only phone with a faster TOUCH sampling rate is the Redmagic 7s Pro at 960 hz.. but that phone's screen can only go up to 120hz on the GRAPHICS REFRESH RATE, so its a toss up. I prefer having 165hz screen refresh and 720hz sampling rate.
Also in screen fingerprint reader that is faster and much more accurate than Samsung's Galaxy phones! This is partly due to better reader technology and partly due to the insanely fast touch sampling rate on this screen! The fast touch sampling rate is mostly there to give you the best responsive interface for gaming, but doesn't hurt to also superspeed beef up the fingerprint sensor speed!
Awesome air triggers with haptic response. They feel incredible, just like real buttons and can actually make some games like COD, PUBG, Genshin Impact, Diablo, and many others play incredibly better with air triggers because your fingers are now comfortably resting and freeing up the entire screen till you are ready to press them. Then when you do press an air trigger, your eye and attention are not taken away from the game hunting and pecking looking for the buttons since you just simply press the right and left triggers which are perfectly set at the top of the phone. Pressing an air trigger sets off a nice haptic vibration so you feel it too. For instance in COD, you can map one trigger to jumping and the other to shooting. So now you can shoot and then jump away with ease. Also helps when jumping to climb up objects and then being instantly ready to attack if someone is hiding up there. In Diablo, it is like a whole new game because now you can rapidly multi cast spells and attacks with 2 easy triggers!
Speaking of haptic response.. when you first setup your Rog 6 Pro, it asks you to play/view a simple AR intro game with this plastic card they give you. When you enter this AR experience, it looks cool, but more amazing is the sound quality from the speakers and the haptic vibration matching the on screen visuals! I have not experienced anything like this on a phone before. It was really cool and if game developers catch on, you will see it in newer game titles and apps and it will be best experienced on phones like this one that have advanced haptics combined with incredible speakers.
No slowdown when gaming. No thermal throttling thanks to better chip design and special modes that are easy to enable like X-Mode and Dynamic in the included Game Genie app. Dynamic Mode keeps a good balance between game performance and CPU/GPU heat without laggy/choppy gameplay. I use this mode almost all the time when I don't have the cooler attached. Switching to the X-Mode will tell the phone, to hell with heat, just give me the absolute maximum power, max speed, max everything... and the phone will do it! It will get mildly more warm, but not enough to damage the phone and not enough to hurt your fingers. It will drain the battery a little faster. With X-Mode enabled, the framerate locks to 144Hz instead of 165hz, unless you go into Game Genie and click on the 144hz button until you see 165hz, then you are set and the phone will remember your choice for that game! With the cooler attached, you can use X-Mode and an even faster X+ mode. That cooler uses a Peltier device that sucks up heat and transfers it away from the phone and that device is also aided by a cool blast fan.
On the back of the Rog 6 Pro is a nice little LCD screen that you can use to show phone notifications with fun and customizable animations. You can use dozens of pre-made animations, or create your own with the easy tools. You can take any photo you have, animate it and set it for any of your phone operations like incoming call, text message, game start, charging, x-mode enabled, phone screen on and more.
Battery life is incredible. If you do just some light gaming and web surfing, it will last more than a day on a full charge. This phone could last 4 days or more of battery life using the Ultra Durable mode, low screen brightness and not gaming. So its really good in an emergency when you need a super long lasting battery life. On moderate use, I got it to last 29 hours!
The phone allows you to link to 2 wifi connections at the same time and also merge it with a 5G cell connection to improve bandwidth, speed and reliability! speeds on 1GB FIOS are 870Mb down, 300Mb up, 9 ping.
The 5G speeds near me are now faster than 4G LTE, finally! (it was slower the first week or so I had the phone) **I fixed this problem today! When you get your ROG 6 Pro, goto your cell provider like T-Mobile and ask for a new sim card. I was using a very old card from 2015! After you get the new sim card and after they activate it correctly.. you need to hold down your finger on the WIFI button, go into WIFI options.. then click on the SIM CARD Internet connection.. and switch it into 5G mode. Then you may or may not need to restart your phone. But after that, you will get full 5G speeds!
In my case, in North NJ I have found a bunch of super fast 5G areas pushing close to 500Mb download speeds and roughly 300Mb upload speeds. The average for 5G is around 200Mb down and 40Mb up. At least in my area. Inside my house, the 5G is much slower (30Mb down, 6Mb up) since its inside a building I guess? The pings are usually between 9 and 30ms. To compare, my Galaxy s10+ had a 4G Lte speed of around 100Mb down and 50Mb up at maximum and usually around 4Mb down, 2Mb up in weaker areas.
Camera quality is fine. Not the most amazing phone camera though. If you want a high end camera, you should use a real DSLR or Mirrorless and not a cellphone. But for basic photography and videos, this is fine. Also has a macro camera, but they hid the macro button inside the options. Dont use the macro, just use the other modes. It also has several cool light leak modes, like car traffic light trails, light painting (use a flashlight to draw your name), waterfall smoothing, pond/lake mirror effect and more. The super fast frame rate video mode is cool. They labeled it Slow Motion in the video section and allows you to shoot the whole video in super fast framerate then chose a section to add slow-motion to. The 4k and 8k video is just ok. If I wanted to film a movie, I would never use any phone. I would use a DSLR, Mirrorless, Go-Pro or a professional video camera.
But for fun easy little clips, just set this phone into the steady-cam mode and then it makes a nice smooth video.
The camera bump on the back of the phone is thin and well placed so that if you rest your phone without a case on it, it will rest flat and not lopsided like the latest iphones, samsungs and other brands that have a very thick camera bump on one side and nothing on the other.
The phone feels great and well balanced, not heavy at all. This is not a 1 handed phone though. My muscle memory adapted to 2 handed use pretty quickly and now to keep this phone from dropping, I hold it more carefully than I have with smaller phones.
Side note... even though this phone is heavier than the Galaxy s10+, I do not get finger/hand fatigue from holding it for long amounts of time gaming. This might be due to the larger screen, or no pill/island pushing game buttons far away, or maybe having 2 air triggers on the top allows your hands to rest in a more natural state?
Not all games support 165hz refresh rate, but the ones that do look amazing. And the games that don't support 165hz still look great too.
The 18GB of RAM is insane! not only is it super fast RAM, but having this much means that my apps and games actually stay loaded like as if you are playing on a PC.. and you can instantly swap back into any game without reloading it!
**Some games and apps are programmed to auto-close when inactive, so for those apps it will behave as it always does on phones with small amounts of RAM like 6GB.
Connecting to a PC with USB3.1 is super fast for browsing the HD, copy-paste & delete! No other phone I tried has ever been this fast! **make sure your PC port is 3.1, make sure your USB C cable is rated 20gb or faster, make sure you use the side USB port on the phone and not the bottom USB port. 5GB video copied in 10 seconds!
I have not yet tried hooking up HDMI to test out screen mirror mode or desktop mode. But both modes are possible with this phone. This phone also supports accessories so you can connect it into a docking station then easily hook up a full speed ethernet cable, a desktop mouse and fullsize keyboard. If you hook up all of these into the docking station with the desktop monitor, it could be the ultimate mini gaming PC! The performance of this phone is well beyond chromebooks and ipads, so it is pretty impressive.
The only cons so far...
***SOLVED!!! When charging and using AUX port at same time in some vehicles you might hear a coil whine noise. It sounds like a digital hiss sound that cycles on when any audio begins to play. The noise goes up and down and then goes away as soon as the music/voice/game stops playing sounds. This noise is vehicle based since I never hear it on headphones nor on PC speakers.
I purchased this Ground Loop Noise Isolator and it instantly got rid of all the coil whine!!
Here is a link:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XQYN77L?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
This noise never happens on the internal phone speakers, nor headphones, nor on PC speakers. If your vehicle has coil whine, then just buy a Ground Loop Noise Isolator to completely eliminate the problem!
Not all 3rd party 65w chargers I have tried will charge at 65w.
**Update. I tried another 3rd party 65w charger (the MAGCUBE 65W), and it is charging at full speed, but the phone will just say "Fast Charging" instead of "Hyper Charging". So ignore what the phone says, and just time it with your clock. If it takes 40 minutes to fully charge, then it is hyper charging. If it takes more than 1 hour to fully charge, then you are just charging at 20w or less. I tried several 65w car chargers and none of them can get a full 65w. Most are above 20w though, so its a medium fast speed. For example, at 40% battery remaining, the 65w car charger took 40 mins to get to 100%. But at home, both 3rd party and Asus 65w chargers got the phone from 40% to 100% in less than 30 mins.
Cant change the shape of the icons. All icons are now trapped inside circles with an outline color.
You can fix this with Nova Launcher or other launchers. I just kept the ugly circles for now.
Got the Active Cooler for free in the mail from the free promo! It is pretty cool! I will only use the cooler at home though since the phone is blazing fast as-is and never overheats on me, never lags, never throttles, never choppy.
Some professional reviewers noted cons such as weight, camera quality, no wireless charging, not waterproof (it is splash proof and it is the first gaming phone to be splash proof), expensive, no physical game buttons, no built in fan, only 720hz sampling rate vs 960hz, only 2 full android updates, and no in-screen selfie cam.
Here is my response to those cons:
1. Weight. This is silly. It is a beast of a phone with the largest battery, all the bells, whistles and kitchen sink built in. Of course it is going to be heavy! That being said, the iphone 14 Pro Max is either the same weight or slightly heavier.
2. Camera Quality. As stated above, the camera quality is pretty good and if you need incredible quality photos beyond anything else with no AI-filtering, no iphone style fake Bokeh effect, then you should not be using any cellphone, you should be using a DSLR or Mirrorless. Same goes for videos. I think it would be a strange day indeed if I see professional wedding/event/nature/sports photographers using cellphones instead of actual cameras.
3. No Wireless Charging. Wireless charging is actually the absolute slowest (and dumbest) way to charge a phone. Why would anyone want to put their phone on a surface and leave it there for 5 hours, not being able to pick it up and use it? If you plug in a phone into a wired port, you instantly get 5x to 10x faster charging speeds and you can actually still use your phone WHILE it is charging! That's actually a huge plus NOT to have wireless.. and not a con at all. Time to end this laziness trend. It takes a maximum of .5 seconds to stick a USB C plug into a phone. I vote for getting rid of ALL wireless chargers in phones.
4. Not waterproof. I would rather have an actual AUX port, 2 USB C ports, real high quality stereo speakers, and 4 microphones for best call voice quality than removing all ports and having waterproofing. I had several Samsung Galaxy phones in the past that are waterproof, yet I never put them into the pool, lake, nor into the ocean without sealing them up in waterproof cases. Why? Because I don't want salt water, sand, algae and/or chlorine getting inside the charging port, aux port, speakers and microphones. I also don't want sand/rocks to scratch up the display or cameras. So lesson learned. Keep all the ports and the awesome speakers. Leave the phone out of the ocean and pool unless you put it into a waterproof case. Problem solved. This phone is the first splashproof gaming phone and that is all the proofing it needs. Take care of your gadgets and they will last a long time.
5. Expensive. Well look at what you are getting, which includes a 512GB storage and compare that with the best Samsung and the best iphone 14 Pro Max at the same storage level. From my last check, both the Samsung and the iphone cost a few hundred dollars more, yet have much worse specs, much slower performance, actual throttling while playing games, actual overheating while playing games, much slower charging, much weaker battery life, and no AUX port. The Red Magic 7s Pro however is a great balance having a real AUX port and most of the same features as the Rog 6 Pro, but a much cheaper price!
6. No physical game buttons. The Black Shark 5 Pro has 2 really cool physical buttons that retract. I like that. But other than that feature, the Black Shark lacks everything else that the Rog 6 Pro has. Slower sampling rate, slower refresh rate, weaker battery, no AUX port, lower quality sound chips, etc. The Rog 6 Pro's haptic air triggers are actually really cool and feel incredible. So I do not feel the need to have physical buttons.
7. No built-in fan. I think it is awesome that the Red Magic 7s Pro has a built in fan and I almost picked that phone. But without splash proofing, I was worried that a small splash might short out the fan and then I would be without a fan in games. I could be wrong, but I didnt find anyone doing splash testing on that phone yet to see what would happen. Also having any mechanically moving parts on a phone means that someday they may fail due to normal wear and tear. If you attach an external fan, and that fan dies, then just buy a replacement fan. But if a built in fan dies, I doubt it would be easy or cheap to repair & replace that internal fan.
8. Only 2 full Android updates. Why does this not bother me? First off, a while back I had a Samsung Galaxy S7. That phone was awesome and I loved it from the moment I first powered it on! The icons, shortcuts, menu options and phone statistics like battery life were as perfect as you could get. I loved the UX/UI! Then one day, I got a forced Android update and it wiped out all that awesome UX/UI with some "modernized" google version that made all the icons look ugly, removed some functionality I was using, made it more difficult to use, and instead of tracking battery life from the last moment you charged it, it only tracked per day. They then kept pushing forced Android updates on that phone and then when I got an S10+, the same thing happened. I enjoyed the 1.0 version of the phone, but then after the forced updates, I lost a lot of cool features. Even the camera functionality was dumbed down in later versions making it more difficult to use. On the iphone side, I hear horror stories every time Apple makes an update to iOS, including fresh new bugs, problems with vibrating cameras, broken ichat, broken connectivity, keyboard bugs, not being able to update without itunes on an apple computer, forced reduction in performance to make customers want to upgrade to newer phone, and days/weeks of reduced battery life while the iphone "adjusts" itself to the latest update.
So right now the Rog 6 Pro has everything perfectly set in Android including the awesome Game Genie overlay. I feel absolutely no need to force any updates on this phone. Security updates will continue forever, so I am not worried about that at all. If it aint broke, don't fix it.
9. No under-screen selfie cam. Its a cool "concept" and the Red Magic 7s Pro has it. But it takes the pretty bad photos with it. Why? Because you are taking photos through a checkerboard of on-screen pixels. So half of those pixels are covering your photo. So no matter how many mega pixels it is, no matter how good the lighting is, you will always have a slightly blurred image. There is no way to shoot through a pixel grid and have a flawless or good quality image. Red Magic, Samsung and Apple need to copy what Asus did with the Rog 6 Pro. Get rid of the useless pill, notch, dynamic island.. and just put all the cameras, mics and speakers into the bevel. Nice and clean with no image quality loss for selfies and 100% screen pixels for everything!
Why? Starting with the phone itself right out of the box it is outstanding, it looks interesting finally breaking the copy paste Samsung and Apple mold after all these years.
This phone actually caused me to switch brands I have been running with Samsung for years and they always impressed, however I started considering other brands after the main phone companies began leaving out the phone chargers and participating in anti consumer practices...
I mean seriously anymore to find a company that ships a charger in the box is like impossible... Apple and Samsung phones are not cheap either, you'd think that charging 1000+ for a phone you'd get the latest and greatest method of charging that expensive brick you just purchased but nooooooo if you can afford the phone so CLeArlY you can afford the $50 charger.... yeah that justifies anti consumer practices.. sure
Continuing with this rant ROG goes above and beyond with PACKING this thing with features, extra controls for gaming, top of the line specs, insane battery life, and A HEADPHONE JACK THANK GOODNESS, little things like these that have been slowly getting phased out of the phone market are all here and its refreshing!!!
I am a little sad about leaving my old brand but excited to support a company that backs up their premium prices with premium hardware!
NOTE:
I have just received the phone today so I will be updating with a user experience section after I've had more time to daily drive it
A couple minor things and this is mainly personal preference after coming from Samsung, the app icons are stuck as circles and this is due to android OS it is fine but looks a little tacky and perhaps it is out of Asus's control but more customization here would go a long way, I liked the old days when you could set the app icons to take the shape of their given photo.
The price I am torn on as it is very high, arguably though it goes above and beyond what most manufacturers do today... This really comes down to the purchaser's judgement here though.
So far amazing, a ton of fun to unbox and good first impression... that is really all I can say at the moment check back when I update this post for a more in depth review!!
