I bought them intending to restrict their use on trails only... which is what I did. I held off reviewing these shoes until I'd worn them a while. I'll be retiring them soon, and intend to replace them with a pair of Speedcross 6 GTX.
They've served me well these past 10 months. I generally hike 5 to 12 miles in them each time, and have put roughly 1000 miles on them. The trails I hiked (and cleared) in them were mostly dirt trails that weren't too rocky, but were occasionally as steep as 60 degrees. I always switched to durable-soled street-running shoes immediately upon leaving grassy or wooded trail areas.
I could climb and descend like a mountain goat in them.
That's the most notable feature I love about them.
Trails that presented no trouble for me while wearing these shoes were really dangerous while wearing durable-soled shoes designed for street-running. The soft, grippy rubber traction difference is incredible.
These quickly became my "go to" hikers when clearing trails. Nice to not be slipping while sawing or limbing downed trees on steep slopes.
I was surprised to discover that I'd neglected to buy the Gortex version, because my feet stayed dry in these while hiking in wet grass. I intend to buy the GTX version next time, but my feet actually stayed fairly dry in these. I never crossed streams in them, but they worked fine in wet grass.
I weigh 140 pounds. If you weigh a lot more than that, if you wear them while walking on asphalt or cement sidewalks, if you walk on rough trails with a lot of talus, scree, or sharp rocks, or if you walk a lot more than 12 miles per day in them - the soles may not last as well for you.
They aren't intended to be durable.
The rubber on these soles is designed to assist you in sticking to slopes. Not icy slopes (you'd need to add spikes) or slick mossy slopes. But most trail slopes.
Soft sticky rubber isn't as durable as the rubber designed for street-running.
As long as you understand that on the front end, you won't be disappointed when these don't last nearly as long as your usual street-running shoes.
Hope this helps.
One additional note: if you need proprioceptive feedback while running steep slopes or knells, Inov-8 trail running shoes are better for that. These Speedcross 6 shoes are more padded and comfortable, but I can't feel the ground underneath my feet nearly as well while wearing them.
If you absolutely need to know where your feet are on the ground, switch to Inov-8s (Mudclaws or similar). If you want a more comfortable workday experience while clearing trails, switch back into the Speedcross 6s as soon as you safely can.
