Simple and Intuitive w/ Most Important Features (child safety!)
After doing quite a bit of research, I decided to purchase two TickTalk 4 watches during a recent sale. I wanted something accessible for my kids (elementary school aged) that was more utilitarian than distraction.Several similar 'smart watches for kids' have more features (annoying games, open internet access) that my kids would probably like more, but the TickTalk4 has the features that I am looking for (closed texting/calling, GPS location monitoring, robust parental controls). That being said, the kids still love the watch because it has enough interesting features (camera, messaging, videocalls, step tracker, etc.). It's a great first 'device' for them and it helps teach them safe use/effective time management!Pros: (chronologically presented from unboxing to use)- very high-end and solid build quality; even the box has a 'premium' (ie Apple products) packaging and even the kids picked up on the quality 'unboxing' process- super easy to set-up; the instructional videos are straightforward and intuitive. I used the included sim, purchased the $9.99 plan through their TickTalk wireless carrier that uses Tmobile service, installed the app on my admin phone... all in 10 minutes or so. Honestly, the hardest part was popping the simcard slot open and getting the simcard to sit properly when installing. Tip: don't apply too much pressure with the provided slot opening device or the cover will fly off and you'll have to search for it!- safety is clearly the main design imperative with this device. With the 'firewall' active, the watch cannot receive any call or SMS from numbers not on their contact list. With the firewall deactivated, the watch can receive calls but still cannot receive any SMS messages. Whether it is on or off, if anyone outside SMS attempts to come in (or calls are made to the watch), the admin user app will notify you.- All texting/sms goes through the app. This means that anyone who wishes to send a message to the watch either needs to have the app or a Ticktalk watch. While this might seem inconvenient, I think it is a valuable safety feature. And anyone who does install the app still needs to get the admin user approval to be able to become a contact of the Ticktalk watch. Since my kids are elementary-school aged still, they're not at an age where they want to send messages to friends, etc. so this isn't really a problem.- The parental controls on the app are great. You can turn off access to the dialpad (so they can only call their contacts); there's a quick 911 button push sequence, but you can turn it off to prevent accidental calls to 911. You can set DND times so watches can't be used during school time or sleep time, etc. You can even remotely restart or turn off their watches.- The watch 'apps' are limited, but that's a features, not a bug. There are some simple wallpapers (see picture) to allow kids to customize, and there is a decent camera for taking pictures and sending them. Kids love it for now, but I can see them getting bored of those features, which goes back to my opening 'utilitarian not distraction' purpose of choosing this watch.- The face is too small to really use to send messages, BUT the voice-to-text function is really accurate. Plus you can pre-write quick responses (through the app) that kids can use to communicate.Cons (not really cons, but things I think they can improve for future updates/iterations)- It is a little bulky and the band is pretty rigid. It makes it seem industrial (or like a G-Shock), but heavy-duty is probably a good thing for kid use.- I wish you could set photos as wallpapers or customize ringtones. Or possibly have a wallpaper/theme/ringtone store to allow for more customization.- The battery life is OK. With the power-saving features on it and regular use, it can go a day or two from my experience. It's actually good because it teaches kids the responsibility of charging nightly.- While this might sound like it contradicts what I mentioned earlier about the app-only messaging, it might be nice to have the option of allowing SMS messages from contacts who don't want to install the app (some grandparents may not like yet another app). I don't know if this is possible because the watch doesn't receive SMS messages; however, SMS messages that are sent are sent to the admin app, so maybe it's possible to then have the option to 'allow' that message to forward to the watch through the watch's messaging interface?- it would be nice if DND mode could have some exceptions, such as still being able to use the quick call functions to parents. I want to set DND mode for school hours so kids don't waste time on the watch during class, BUT the ability for them to reach out/be reached during school hours is a critical reason for the phone.. so we don't activate DND.Overall, excellent product and does exactly what it's designed to do but I think some things can be updated/improved with software patches.

I really like how easy it is for my child to learn to use the watch.

Additionally, the parental controls are great to ensure that children will only be able to use the watch to call approved contacts.

The watch also does not have applications which will be distracting for a child such as youtube, browsers, etc. Its great for children with special needs.

Note: this watch does accept SG sims and can be used in SG

Bought this as a replacement of another watch. Admittedly, this one is more expensive but, so far, worth every cent.

HOWEVER, pray that the strap doesn’t break. They charge $100 to replace it
