Upon receiving my Ticwatch, I allowed it to charge for several hours only to find it would not turn on. Not knowing whether the watch and/or charger was faulty, I considered my options. I ordered a replacement charger and waited few days for its arrival hoping I hadn’t wasted money buying a second charger for a defective smartwatch. Replacement charger solved all my problems and I am quite pleased with my purchase.
Not so much it seems.
The TicWatch Pro seemed like the perfect option for an Android-native smart watch on a budget. I had originally purchased a Samsung Active 2 but had far too many issues trying to get the Tizen-based system to integrate with the features I needed from Google on my Nokia 8.1. I did some more reading and digging through reviews and decided to try the TicWatch Pro 2020.
My first TicWatch Pro arrived with a completely discharged battery. I downloaded the latest version of WearOS to my phone without issue. After letting it top up over 3 hours and going through a slightly painful pairing process with my phone the watch itself needed software updates. I completed those and started trying to get the REMINDERS feature working off the lower-right hot button. After configuring permissions multiple times, factory resets, re-pairing, clearing app caches for all-things-Google I still couldn't get a new Reminder started with the watch. Beyond that, the battery on the watch dropped from 100% to 70% just within the first hour of use. Touch input on the front of the watch is glitchy, inconsistent and slow, sometimes taking several seconds to register a tap or a swipe. Warning bells started to go off. I messed with the configuration off and on for the next day and ultimately decided that the watch I'd received was malfunctioning; I just couldn't get a REMINDER to work. I could set Reminders from my phone, but that wasn't my use case, and even then they would not show on the TicWatch Pro. I returned this first watch for a replacement.
I few days later the replacement TicWatch Pro shows up, and already it seems like things are better. The watch is more responsive to touch input and it didn't need a software update out of the box. It still needed a full battery charge up, but as a reconditioned watch I was expecting this. Again through the semi-painful watch-phone pairing experience, this time complicated by the fact that my phone didn't seem to want to forget TicWatch #1. I had to uninstall WearOS to clear it, then re-download the app, not a huge deal, but kind of a waste of time. Again, I could not get REMINDERS to set using the TicWatch Pro. I would start the Reminders app, click "Create New +" and the watch would just hang indefinitely on the loading animation. Looking through support articles and Redditt showed I wasn't the only person to have this issue, but all of the suggested solutions were options I'd already tried and the new suggestions were ineffective.
One of the suggestions was to use Google Assistant from another view on the TicWatch to set a Reminder, this actually worked! A few more clicks, but possibly a livable workaround. Unfortunately, the REMINDER that got created only alerted on my phone (which will be in my scrub pants pocket) and I can't access it to either view it or shut it off since I'd be in a patient room. This isn't a solution.
TicWatch Pro #2 still had battery life issues, not as bad as TicWatch #1, but just wearing the watch around the house for about 4 hours trying to see if Reminders would work resulted in the battery level going from 95% to 70%. I really don't think it would last a full 12-13 hour work day even with the Essential Mode being the default screen display.
At this point my frustration of having wasted multiple hours over multiple days trying to get TicWatch to execute even the most basic WearOS function was beyond redemption and I threw in the towel. I'm not sure if the TicWatch Pro hardware is not up to the task, or if WearOS is still buggy but it's hard to believe that something as simple as REMINDERS won't work on the watch. My requirement for wrist reminders is still pending and any suggestions are welcome, but TicWatch isn't the solution you are looking for. And EVEN IF it was, the battery life on these reconditioned units isn't good enough to get through a single work day.
I'll keep looking for a solution, but for right now the TicWatch Pro 2020 + WearOS in 2021 is garbage. Avoid it.
